Invisalign® clear aligners can be used to treat a variety of dental issues, including spacing issues and crowding problems, as well as mild to moderate bite issues:

• Underbite (your lower teeth extend more than your upper teeth)
• Overbite (your upper teeth extend beyond your lower teeth, also called buck teeth)
• Crossbite (when you close your mouth, your upper teeth are behind your lower teeth)
• Open bite (when your top and bottom teeth do not touch each other when you close your mouth, revealing an opening between the top and bottom teeth)

• Alignment issues for baby teeth and permanent teeth

Invisalign® treatment is not suitable for those with severe dental issues or severe bite issues. The treatment’s effectiveness also depends on wearing the series of aligners as instructed. Unless you are eating or drinking, Invisalign® aligners should be worn almost all the time.

The overall purpose of braces and Invisalign® clear aligners is to bring your teeth into better alignment, whether you wish to straighten crooked teeth, fill a gap in your teeth, or minimise crowding. All orthodontic solutions involve applying pressure to the teeth in order to move them gradually. However, the similarities between Invisalign® clear aligners and conventional braces end here.

Conventional braces involve brackets that are cemented to each tooth, and a wire connects them. On the other hand, Invisalign® treatment is a system of clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth and are removable. These aligners are also known as “invisible braces” since they are difficult to notice. Because Invisalign® aligners can be removed, cleaning your teeth will be much easier during your treatment. However, some people find wearing them for 20–22 hours every day bothersome. While wearing the clear aligners, you are not permitted to eat or drink anything other than water. People who may be tempted to skip a day or leave their clear aligners out for more than four hours a day may benefit from fixed braces that cannot be removed. If these criteria are not followed, treatment will be less effective or take longer.

Invisalign® treatment is suitable for almost everyone. However, while they can correct most orthodontic issues, the most severe malocclusions and more complex issues will still require traditional braces and, sometimes, even surgery.

An Invisalign®-trained dental professional begins the treatment process with an initial consultation. You will have your teeth scanned digitally and have x-rays of your jaw taken. They’ll utilise this image to map out a customised 3D treatment plan for shifting your teeth into their correct position. Next, they will take an impression or mould of your teeth and use the treatment plan to produce a series of aligner trays. By applying pressure to them, Invisalign® clear aligners gradually shifts and moves teeth into position by applying pressure to them.

During your Invisalign® treatment, you will wear the aligners every day and night for about six to eighteen months of treatment time. Clear aligners are typically worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. However, this varies depending on specific cases. It’s critical to follow your orthodontist’s or dentist’s recommendations for how long you should wear clear aligners each day. It’s important to remember that getting used to having your Invisalign® aligners in your mouth may take a few days. Until your tongue and mouth adjust to the trays, you may have a minor lisp. You’ll probably feel some pressure as well, which indicates that the aligners are working.

As your teeth shift, you will need to visit your dentist every couple of weeks for dental monitoring and to have a new set made.

You will likely need additional aligners, or refinements, in order to ensure a straight smile and proper occlusion. Wearing a retainer after treatment may be recommended by your dentist to prevent your teeth from shifting back.

When you have Invisalign® clear aligners on, you cannot eat or drink anything except water. They are typically worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. The aligners must be removed for eating, since food and drink can get stuck in them. As a result, plaque can accumulate on your teeth and gumline, causing cavities. You may also stain your teeth and your aligners if liquid seeps into them. But there are no restrictions on what you can eat or drink when you remove your clear aligners.
